Pfc Joe Mann was a paratrooper in the 502nd Parachute infantry, 101st Airborne Division who jumped into Best, Netherlands in mid September of 1944. His Company (H) was deployed to hold a bridge and road in preparation for the (failed) British planned “Operation Market Garden” Joe single handedly destroyed an enemy emplacement and rained fire on German troops with his M1 rifle despite being wounded 5 times from an exposed position.
Even though gravely wounded 22 year old Mann insisted on serving guard duty that evening but the next morning during a counter attack a German grenade was thrown in his pit. Unable to get out Pfc Mann smothered the blast with his bodysaving his brother troops. For this action he received 5 purple hearts and the Medal of Honor.
