JOE MANN – Commemorative Shoot – October 19, 2024
          Â
Pfc Joe Mann was a paratrooper in the 502nd Parachute infantry, 101st Airborne Division, who jumped into Best, Netherlands in mid September of 1944.  His Company (H) was deployed to hold a bridge and road in preparation for the (failed) British planned “Operation Market Garden”.
Pfc Mann single handedly destroyed an enemy emplacement and rained fire on German troops from an exposed position with his M1 rifle, despite being wounded 5 times.  Even though gravely wounded, 22-year-old Mann insisted on serving guard duty that evening.  The next morning, during a counterattack, a German grenade was thrown into his pit.  Unable to get out, Pfc Mann smothered the blast with his body saving his brother troops.  For this action he received 5 purple hearts and the Medal of Honor.
